Carroll’s Wheatley qualifies for state meet

Carroll County sophomore Kristen Wheatley has qualified for the 4A Girls’ Cross Country Championships Nov. 10 in Great Plains near Manassas and earned all-region honors.

Wheatley qualified for the state meet by placing ninth out of 70 runners November 1 in the Region 4D Cross Country Championships at Randolph Park in Dublin. She finished the 3.1-mile course in 19:44 to finish in the top 10. The top 15 runners in the event earned All-Region 4D honors while the top five runners not on the top three teams qualified for the state meet. Wheatley finished second among runners not on a top three team.

Carroll County freshman Kendra Durnil finished 26th at the Region 4D Championship with a time of 21:17. Blacksburg’s Kaitlynn Wolfe won the individual girls’ regional championship with a time of 18:15. Blacksburg also captured the regional team title with a total of 21 points. Jefferson Forest (43 points) and Pulaski County (113) also qualified for that state.

Carroll County junior Justin Leagan was the top Cavalier runner in the varsity boys’ championship. Leagan placed 48th out of 77 runners with a time of 18:22. Also competing for Carroll were Ebrahim Warshana (19:11), Dakota Guynn (19:13), Caron Piatt (19:34), Trace Robinson (22:22) and Devin Templeton (23:30).

Theo Woods of E.C. Glass was the individual boys’ champion with a first-place time of 16:03. Blacksburg won the regional boys’ title with 33 points, while Pulaski County (55) and Jefferson Forest (74) also qualified for the state championships.
