For Carroll County’s volleyball team, the Region 4D Tournament is playing out like an old River Ridge District schedule.
The Lady Cavaliers kept their season alive Tuesday by defeating old district rival Salem 25-22, 25-22, 25-19 in a Region D Quarterfinal in Hillsville. With the win, Carroll County (15-7) advanced to a Nov. 2 Region D Quarterfinal at Blacksburg, another old River Ridge District foe.
The Cavaliers moved on thanks to the three-set sweep over the Spartans, but it was not easy. Carroll prevailed and proved the tougher team by winning the first two sets by identical tight scores of 25-22 before getting a little more breathing room in the decisive third set.
Taylor Spangler dished out a game-high 33 assists and was solid in other phases of the game as well, recording eight digs and two aces for the Lady Cavs. Teammate Jolee Sloss had a big game up front with 15 kills, 14 digs and two blocks. Libero Adrienne Harris also had a good playoff opener, finishing with 14 digs and three aces for the Cavaliers, who advance to Thursday’s Region D Semifinal against a tough Blacksburg team with a berth in the state tournament on the line.
The 3A state runner-up a year ago, Blacksburg improved to 21-4 Tuesday with a three-set sweep of Amherst County. The Bruins, who moved up to 4A this season, swept River Ridge District powerhouses Cave Spring and Hidden Valley this year.
