Carroll opens state tourney March 2

Carroll County will open the Class 4A VHSL State Championships Friday, March 2 against Loudoun Valley at 6 p.m. at Pulaski County High School. Tickets are $10.

The Cavaliers earned the right to host the game after winning the Region 4D championship on Feb. 22 with a 50-40 victory over William Byrd. Loudoun Valley (20-4) qualified for the state tournament by finishing as runner-up in Region 4C. The Vikings lost 76-56 in the Region 4C Championship to undefeated Millbrook (25-0).

Meanwhile, Millbrook will host William Byrd (21-6) on March 2 in a state quarterfinal at Shenandoah University. The winner of that contest will play the winner of Loudoun Valley-Carroll County on March 5 or March 6 at the higher-seeded site. With a win over Loudoun Valley, Carroll County (23-3) would also get to host that state semifinal, most likely at Pulaski County High School or Radford University.

On the other side of the bracket, Region 4A champion Lake Taylor will host Region 4B runner-up Eastern View at Norview High School and Region 4B champion Monacan will host Region 4A runner-up King’s Fork at Midlothian High School. The winners of those two games will then meet in a state semifinal.

Semifinal winners will meet Sat., March 10 at 4:30 p.m. in the state championship game at the Siegel Center in Richmond at Virginia Commonwealth University.
