Carroll girls advance to region semifinals

Liberty Christian Academy was no match for Carroll County’s defense, mustering just 20 points Friday in a Region 4D quarterfinal against Carroll County in Hillsville.

The No. 8-seed Bulldogs managed just four points each in the first, second and fourth quarters as the top-seeded Cavaliers cruised to a 56-20 victory. Carroll County (21-3) led 12-4 after the first quarter and then outscored LCA (9-13) 17-4 in the second to pull away.

Danielle Gallimore drilled three 3-pointers and led all scorers with 13 points. Cavalier teammate Kenda Robinson added eight points. Mariah Carter chipped in seven points for Carroll, while teammates Abi Easter, Abigail Kennedy and Jo Ann Caviness each scored six points.

With the win, Carroll County advanced to the Region 4D Semifinals on Feb. 20 against No. 4 seed Blacksburg, a 34-24 winner Friday over No. 5 Amherst County. Carroll County and Blacksburg met once during the regular season in a non-district clash at Blacksburg on Jan. 26 with the Cavaliers prevailing 64-24. With a win in the rematch, Carroll would earn a berth in the Group 4A State Tournament and would also host the Region 4D Championship game on Feb. 22 in Hillsville against the winner of William Byrd-Charlottesville.
