Jackson Nester and Forest Webb both won a pair of individual titles Jan. 31 in the Three Rivers District Championships at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.
Nester’s district championships came in the 200 individual medley (with a time of 2:07.62) and the 500 freestyle (5:02.16). Webb swam to district crowns in the 100 backstroke (53.65 seconds) and 100 freestyle (48.14 seconds). Nester and Webb also teamed with Kaleb Payne and Brett Bowman to capture the 200 medley relay title with a time of 1:49.62. The same quartet also won the 400 freestyle relay (3:42.74).
Payne claimed an individual championship for Carroll County in the 100 butterfly (58.56 seconds). In women’s racing, Ellie Webb won district titles in both the 100 butterfly (1:02.64) and the 100 freestyle (58.33 seconds). In total, 22 of Carroll’s swimmers advanced to the regional swim meet.
As a team, Carroll County finished second in overall boys’ standing with 131 points. Radford claimed the boys’ title with 149 points. James River was third with 86.5 points, followed by Giles (56.5), Alleghany (27) and Glenvar (5).
Other Carroll County boys’ swimmers to place were Brett Bowman (second in the 200 freestyle, 2:23.27; and sixth in 100 breaststroke, 1:23.32), Nick Bell (sixth in 200 freestyle, 2:31.06; and seventh in 500 freestyle, 7:33.74), Gabriel Robertson (seventh in 200 individual medley, 2:44.38; and fifth in 100 backstroke, 1:16.40), Matthew Perkins (eighth in 50 freestyle, 27.14; and seventh in 100 freestyle, 1:05.36), Lance Rotenizer (eighth in 100 freestyle, 1:07.81), Ethan Bowman (seventh in 100 backstroke, 1:28.71), and Blake Phipps (fourth in 100 breaststroke, 1:22.24). Carroll also placed third in the 200 freestyle relay as Matthew Perkins, Korbin Monday, Nick Bell and Lance Rotenizer finished in 1:50.
In girls’ action, Carroll County’s Megan Culbreth placed eighth in the 200 individual medley (3:27.45), Jacie Newman took fourth in the 500 freestyle (7:37.12) and Molly McGrady placed fifth in the 500 freestyle (7:59.88). The Lady Cavaliers also finished fifth in the 200 medley relay with Emma Thompson, Adrienne Harris, Ellie Webb and Mallory South combining for a time of 2:25.43. Thompson, Harris and South joined Emily Godwin to captured fifth in the 200 free relay as well with a time of 2:24.14. Carroll also placed fifth in the 400 freestyle relay as Virginia Worrell, Molly McGrady, Jacie Newman and Ellie Webb finished in 5:06.24.
