Carroll County opened the first half on a 10-0 run and began the second half with an 11-0 spurt to cruise past Glenvar 59-32 Friday in a Three Rivers District contest in Hillsville.
Laken Alley started the onslaught with a 3-pointer just 10 seconds into the game. Madi Dalton stole the ball and converted a layup 13 seconds later. Mariah Carter added a pair of free throws just 13 seconds after that and Danielle Gallimore’s 3-pointer gave Carroll County (10-2, 5-0 Three Rivers District) a 10-0 lead just 92 seconds into the game. The Cavs used that momentum to take a 36-12 advantage at the half, then completely put the game away with 11 straight points to open the third quarter.
“That’s pretty nice. I will take it,” Carroll County head coach Marc Motley said. “We came out ready to play in the first half and we came out ready to play in the second half and that is important because a lot of times kids can look at the clock or look at the scoreboard and see that you are up and they don’t have that same intensity. We came out the second half with a lot of intensity and that makes a big difference. It always helps when you can get out and get a steal or get a quick turnover or rebound and you get kids out and they are running the floor.”
Glenvar (6-8, 2-3 Three Rivers District) shot a paltry 16.7 percent from the floor (3-of-18) in the first half and turned it over 12 times during that span. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers took twice as many shots in the first half (36), many of them coming in transition after turnovers and quick Highlander misses.
“That has kind of been our M.O. all year. We want to push the basketball as hard as we can go and we feel like we have a lot of kids that can run the floor for us. I know you have a tendency to see Mariah run ahead of people and see does that a lot, but on the other hand you have got Kenda (Robinson), you have got Madi Dalton, they just may not score. They may get the ball down the floor and swing the basketball before the defense can get set and get us a great look,” Motley said. “Getting the basketball up the floor quickly before the defense gets set is a big thing we try do every single day and we did that pretty well tonight.”
The Lady Cavs also had the hot hand from outside, knocking down eight 3-pointers on the night. Danielle Gallimore made four from long range, while Abi Easter and Alley both connected twice from downtown. Carter led Carroll with 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Gallimore tossed in 12 points and finished with a team-high seven assists. The Cavs also took incredible care of the basketball, committing just four turnovers for the entire game.
“We usually turn it over more in practice when we don’t have a defense. When we have that dummy defense we usually turn it over more than three times, dribble it off our foot, throw it out of bounds or miss a catch, but they didn’t tonight,” Motley said. “Four (turnovers) for the game and two of those are charges, so we didn’t give them the basketball very often. We didn’t give them those extra possessions and that is big for us. They had four offensive rebounds and we had four turnovers, so that is great. I will live with that any day.”
Due to the weather, Carroll County has some schedule changes for the week of Jan. 22-26. After traveling to James River on Jan. 22 and hosting Floyd County on Jan. 23, the Cavs will host Radford on Thursday, Jan. 25 and travel to Blacksburg on Friday, Jan. 26.
